The Matrix

A search for external proof becomes a story about acting on belief: Neo becomes capable of changing the system only after choosing whom to save.

Science-fiction action

Written by Lana Wachowski and Lilly Wachowski

01

Act I

Setup & commitment

Establish the story’s world, inner pressure, dramatic promise, and the choice that crosses into the central pursuit.

  1. 01

    Opening Image

Falling green code gives way to Trinity's impossible rooftop escape, establishing that the apparent rules of reality can bend.

  2. 02

    Ordinary World / Setup

Thomas Anderson lives as a compliant office worker by day and the questioning hacker Neo by night.

  3. 03

    Inner Pressure / Wound

Neo's restless sense that something is wrong has isolated him and turned the truth about the Matrix into an obsession.

  4. 04

    Theme in Motion

The messages asking what the Matrix is and telling Neo to wake up frame knowledge as a choice rather than a passive discovery.

  5. 05

    Inciting Incident

Trinity finds Neo at a nightclub and confirms that his private question has an answer someone is actively hiding.

  6. 06

    Refusal / Debate

Neo cannot follow Morpheus's instructions onto the scaffold; the Agents arrest him and implant a tracking device.

  7. 07

    Guide / New Information

Morpheus offers Neo a direct choice between returning to familiar ignorance and learning the truth, whatever it costs.

  8. 08

Break into Act II (Stunning Surprise #1)

Neo swallows the red pill, wakes in a human power plant, and is physically expelled from the only reality he has known.

02

Act II-A

Expansion & promise

Explore the premise, develop secondary threads, test the plan, and drive toward a central reversal or revelation.

  1. 09

    Secondary / Parallel Thread

Neo's growing bond with Trinity and the Nebuchadnezzar crew gives his search for truth a human stake beyond abstract destiny.

  2. 10

    Fun & Games

Combat training, the jump test, and the Woman in Red simulation let Neo test both the freedom and the danger of a programmable reality.

  3. 11

    First Pinch Point

The Woman in Red simulation shows how quickly an Agent can inhabit the system and turn any unfreed person into a threat.

  4. 12

    Approach to Inmost Cave

The visit to the Oracle turns Neo's desire for certainty into a more difficult question about choice and self-knowledge.

  5. 13

    Midpoint

The Oracle tells Neo that he is not the One and predicts that he will have to choose between his own life and Morpheus's.

03

Act II-B

Contraction & cost

Turn early progress against the characters as pressure, reversals, consequences, and apparent defeat narrow their options.

  1. 14

    Renewed Drive / Plan-in-Motion

After the Oracle’s prediction, the crew heads for an exit while Neo weighs what belief in the prophecy requires.

  2. 15

    Reversal / Betrayal

Cypher’s betrayal triggers an ambush; Morpheus sacrifices himself so Neo and the others can reach the exit.

  3. 16

    Bad Guys Close In

Cypher disconnects and kills crew members in the real world before Tank survives and stops him.

  4. 17

    Second Pinch Point

Agents torture Morpheus for Zion’s codes while Sentinels begin closing on the Nebuchadnezzar.

  5. 18

    Apparent Defeat

The survivors prepare to unplug Morpheus before he breaks, apparently accepting the loss of their leader.

  6. 19

    Gate / Gauntlet

Neo faces the Oracle’s choice: preserve himself or risk his life for Morpheus, without proof that he is the One.

  7. 20

Break into Act III / Rescue Plan

Neo rejects the plan to unplug Morpheus and commits to a rescue with Trinity, choosing the moral action without proof that he is the One.

04

Act III

Choice & resolution

Convert loss into a final choice, carry that choice through the climax, and show the resulting changed state.

  1. 21

    Final Preparations

Neo and Trinity arm themselves and re-enter the Matrix, converting Neo's choice into a direct assault on the Agents' stronghold.

  2. 22

    Gate / Gauntlet

They fight through the lobby and reach the rooftop, surviving escalating security and an Agent's intervention.

  3. 23

    Rescue / Road Back

Neo pilots the helicopter rescue, catches Morpheus in midair, and gets him and Trinity to safety before facing the return route alone.

  4. 24

    Final Battle / Climax

Instead of running, Neo turns to fight Agent Smith in the subway, proving that his relationship to fear and the system has changed.

  5. 25

    All Is Lost / Self-Revelation

Smith shoots Neo at the final exit, but Trinity's declaration reaches him; he revives, sees the Matrix as code, and destroys Smith from within.

  6. 26

    Denouement / Return with Elixir

Neo calls the machines and promises to show humanity a world no longer bounded by their rules.

  7. 27

    Final Image

Neo launches skyward, code rain replaced by a liberated flight.
