Donnie Darko

In the theatrical cut, a suburban coming-of-age story becomes a fatalistic time loop whose meaning remains partly unresolved by design.

Act II-B

Contraction & cost

Turn early progress against the characters as pressure, reversals, consequences, and apparent defeat narrow their options.

  1. 14

  4. 17

At the Halloween party, Gretchen arrives after her mother disappears; Donnie sees the countdown is nearly finished and heads for Sparrow’s house.

  5. 18

    Gate / Gauntlet

Bullies attack Donnie and Gretchen outside Sparrow’s house as an approaching car turns the road into the predicted collision point.

  6. 19

All Is Lost (Stunning Surprise #2)

Car accident kills Gretchen; driver is Frank (alive teen). Donnie shoots him—ultimate failure.

04

Act III

Choice & resolution

Convert loss into a final choice, carry that choice through the climax, and show the resulting changed state.

    Dark Night of the Soul

Alone with Gretchen's body, Donnie grasps the causal loop and his role.

  2. 21

    New Resolve / Break-into-Three

Donnie recognizes the engine, Frank, and the closing time loop as parts of one causal pattern and drives Gretchen’s body toward the ridge.

  3. 22

    Final Preparations / Road Back

From the ridge, Donnie watches the vortex tear an engine from Rose’s plane and send it backward through time.

  4. 23

    Final Battle / Climax

The previous 28 days unwind; Donnie wakes on October 2 as the engine falls toward his bedroom.

  5. 24

    Self-Revelation / Final Choice

Donnie remains, knowingly dies under engine, saving Gretchen and others.

  6. 25

    Denouement / Return with Elixir

Primary timeline restored; characters wake with uneasy déjà-vu, grief ripples subtly.

  7. 26

    Final Image

Gretchen, never having met Donnie, exchanges a puzzled wave with his mourning mother; Frank (alive) unconsciously rubs the eye he was shot in—echo of the erased timeline.
